Homeland security Alejandro Mayorkas recently revealed that the nearly 15,000 Haitian migrants camping out under the bridge in Del Rio, Texas were not tested for COVID-19 before being released into the United States. While acknowledging that he is unaware of anyone contracting COVID-19 at the camp, Mayorkas made it clear that migrants who walk across the border aren’t required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test. It’s almost like they have more freedom and rights than the law-abiding Americans who have to pull out their vaccine passport just to eat at a restaurant.
Mayorkas made the announcement at the White House during one of the daily press briefings. He talked about Department of Homeland Security officials setting up medical tents with 150 medical professionals to help the surge of migrants but did not talk about any of them getting sick with the coronavirus. There were as many as 30,000 illegal immigrants that passed through the camp.
“We did not test that population of individuals. We do not know, I do not know, I should say if I may be perfectly accurate, I do not know if anyone was sick with COVID. We certainly had some people get sick, not with COVID to my knowledge and we addressed their illnesses,” Mayorkas said.
Approximately 12,400 individuals will have their cases heard by an immigration judge and were allowed to remain in the United States. Another 8,000 have chosen to return to Mexico and about 5,000 will be processed by DHS officials, which will determine whether they will be deported or placed in an immigration processing center. So far, 2,000 have been deported.
When asked about the use of Title 42 public health protections at the border, Mayorkas emphasizes that they are a public health authority, not an immigration policy. Title 42 is a Trump-era health order that allows the Border Patrol to expel some migrants. He said it can be used to protect Americans and the migrants themselves, but that the surge of migrants continues to be expelled under the Center for Disease Control & Prevention’s authority.
Mayorkas went on to talk about the migrants being released into the United States, adding that they remain in touch to ensure their appearance in court is at the designated time of appearance. He described it as the “alternatives to detention” and said they do not intend to stay here for a lengthy period of time.
“We are applying the law pursuant to an order that the Centers for Disease Control issued in light of the fact that this country and the world is in the midst of a pandemic. We are exercising that authority, as we are required to do, to protect the health and well-being of the migrants themselves, our personnel, local communities, and the American public,” Mayorkas said.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki has refused to talk about the COVID-19 testing process at the border, only adding that migrants are screened for symptoms of COVID-19 and then quarantined if they are symptomatic. She went on to emphasize the same talking points as Mayorkas and said that the migrants are not intending to stay for a “lengthy” period of time. She said they are only preventing a scenario where large numbers of people are gathering and posing a threat to the community.
Reporters have even started to question officials on the COVID-19 guidance, asking why the Biden Administration is requiring vaccination for 100 million American workers but not for migrants. Psaki is once again proving the administration does not care about COVID-19 and that everything they do is just a pure power grab. Migrants aren’t asked, tested, or vaccinated, for COVID-19 because the Biden Administration doesn’t care. As long as they are future Democrat voters.
