According to Thursday reports, the Iranian operative accused of plotting to assassinate John Bolton, former White House National Security Advisor, also had plans for former Secretary Mike Pompeo.
On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced that Shahram Poursafi was being charged as a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Poursafi is accused of using encrypted messaging apps to offer $300,000. to hire Bolton to murder. He also referred to a $ 1 million offer for a future job.
According to CNN’s Thursday report, Pompeo was the second target Poursafi mentioned.
Bolton and Pompeo, both top Iran critics, frequently recommend hawkish policies toward Iran.
Poursafi’s assassinations would be a reaction to the 2020 U.S. drone strikes that killed General Qasem SOLEMANI, the commander of the IRGC.
“Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps tried to hatch a brazen plan: assassinate an ex-U.S. official on U.S. territory in retaliation of U.S. actions,” stated U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves of the District of Columbia in Wednesday’s press release.
He said that Iran and other hostile countries should know that the U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with our law enforcement partners, will do everything possible to stop their violent plots.
Pompeo reportedly has been protected by Iran threats since the end of President Donald Trump’s presidency.
