The Miami Herald reports that Areu, who also uses the name Cathy Areu Jones, started her weekend in a Miami jail. She was booked Friday for not just financially exploiting her elderly mother but also for kidnapping her. Areu, a self-anointed “liberal guru,” has appeared on Fox News from time to time to provide a left-wing counterpoint to the likes of Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson.
According to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office press release, Areu told her mother that she would go out for ice cream with her grandchildren. The incident was reported to the police by neighbors.
According to the office, the investigation began in 2019 after Areu used a quitclaim form to seize her mother’s home. Friday’s press release stated that
“The victim’s financial records were examined, revealing a loss exceeding $224,000 including the missing payment from a reverse mortgage. The victim did this voluntarily. The victim did this on her own initiative.
Areu was arrested on an active warrant dating to June 28, 2022.
The Post Millennial also mentions that Areu was a Washington Post contributor editor in the past. This was in addition to her appearances on Fox News. In July 2020, Areu filed a lawsuit against Fox’s Hannity Karlson, Howard Kurtz, and Ed Henry. She claimed she was the victim of sexual harassment and that her workplace was hostile. However, the judge dismissed the suit as Areu was an unpaid guest. His claims were not legally valid.
