Daniel Penny revealed his side of this story. Daniel Penny was the Marine that subdued Jordan Neely on a New York subway. Penny is a violent drifter. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office should have been embarrassed by this. But, Alvin Bragg decided to charge Penny with manslaughter.
Penny shared with us a story we had never heard before.
He was stumbling and seemed high. He tore off his jacket violently and hurled it at people on my left while screaming at me. I was listening to music. He repeatedly said: “I’ll kill you,” “I’m prepared to spend my entire life in prison,” and “I’m willing to die.” “I took off my headphones to listen to him. ”
There’s a common misconception that Marines don’t get scared. We’re actually taught one of our core values is courage. And courage is not the absence of fear, but how you handle fear. I was scared for myself, but I looked around and saw women and children. He was yelling in their faces, saying, saying these threats. I couldn’t just sit still.
People claim I choked Mr. Neely to death. It’s also false. He was breathing, and I was trying to restrain him. It is ridiculous. I didn’t see anyone threatening passengers. I saw a man of color threatening many people of color.
Zeeshan Aleem, an MSNBC reporter accused Penny in May (seriously!) Penny was accused of racism when he said he had planned a trip to Africa.
Penny told the Post that, “the incident in which Penny, a white woman, is accused of killing Neely, a black man who was homeless, had nothing to with race” and “I am no White supremacist.” Penny’s explanation of why it could not be racial was skeptical: “I had planned a road trip to Africa before the incident” he told The Post.
Okay! Here is the new version to the “some close friends of mine are black” defense. While this reasoning doesn’t confirm or deny Penny’s actions were motivated racially, it should raise suspicions.
But, should we? Do we need to look at every single white man in the news, and connect him to racism based on the smallest thread? Is it not better to wait until the facts are known, since people accused of crimes are innocent unless they can be proven guilty beyond doubt?
Neely explained that:
In the newspaper a few days after the accident, I read that a woman of color had called me a “hero”. She was one person I tried to save. We were all terrified. Neely would not stop shouting at the terrified passengers.
No video was taken when the altercation began because people fled or were scared. Videos were not recorded until the situation had been resolved.
I had to take action. I was trying to control him until the police arrived. I prayed to the police that they would step in and take control of the situation. It was not something I wanted to be involved in.
Penny was welcomed on the train by all. If Neely had not taken action, who knows what might have happened? Media frenzy in calling Penny an alleged murderer with no evidence led to protests and finally to Penny being prosecuted.
Alvin Bragg is a political beast and will never drop the charges. Career criminals are given a free pass.
